The sitcoms of the ‘50s and ‘60s were great and all, but we just might be living in the Golden Age of television right now. With the plots more complicated, the storytelling more nuanced and the TV marketplace more expansive than ever, it’s a great time to be a television fan. The nominations for the 70th Emmy Awards were announced Thursday morning via livestream, and the spread of TV talent proves that there’s so much to celebrate. The Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley and New Amsterdam’s Ryan Eggold, along with the Television Academy’s chairman and CEO Hayma Washington, delivered the nominations, and Netflix surprised us all with the most nods of any network or streaming platform—Netflix snagged 112 nominations, while HBO, the nomination frontrunner for the past 18 years, collected “only” 108.
Obvious players like The Handmaid’s Tale, Game of Thrones and This Is Us racked up their share of noms in both the acting and series categories, while underdogs like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the BBC’s new cult drama Killing Eve performed likewise. Netflix’s GLOW received a surprising nomination for best comedy series, as well.
Game of Thrones, which wrapped up its seventh season in August, led the pack with a whopping 22 nominations. Another HBO behemoth, Westworld, tied with Saturday Night Live for second place, each procuring 21 nods.
In the actor categories, jack-of-all-trades Donald Glover secured his second nomination for playing Earn in Atlanta, which also received its second nom for best comedy series. This Is Us and Westworld rule the dramatic acting categories, with Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia receiving nods for the NBC hit, and Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris receiving a pair of Westworld recognitions.
Elisabeth Moss received her second nomination for playing June Osborne/Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale, her seventh acting nominee total. A clan of funny ladies rule the comedic acting categories: Allison Janney is nominated for her role in Mom, an oft-snubbed series, and the always-animated Issa Rae received her first Emmy nom for acting in Insecure.
The 70th annual Primetime Emmys will air Sunday, Sept. 17 on NBC. Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” frontmen Colin Jost and Michael Che are set to host.
