SNL‘s “Weekend Update” Anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost to Host 2018 Emmys

SNL‘s “Weekend Update” Anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost to Host 2018 Emmys

Saturday Night Live’s famous segment “Weekend Update” has seen some great duos. We had Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers, and now we have Colin Jost and Michael Che. Variety reports that Che and Jost will now host the 2018 Emmy Awards, which will be executive produced by their SNL boss, Lorne Michaels.

“NBC is thrilled to be the home of this year’s Emmy Awards and with Colin and Michael in the driver’s seat as hosts, along with surprise appearances by other cast members of Saturday Night Live, I think we are in for one of the funniest awards shows in a long time,” said chairman of NBC Entertainment Robert Greenblatt.

Paul Telegdy, president, alternative and reality group, NBC Entertainment, added, “We’re proud of our deep comedy roster at NBC, and Michael and Colin—along with the return of king of comedy producer Lorne Michaels — will make this the must-see comedy event of the year.”

This will be the first time since 1988 that Michaels will executive produce the show. The 73-year-old’s impact within television is monumental. Over the last decade, he’s moved into producing The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers, in addition to SNL.

Jost joined SNL in 2014, anchoring alongside Cecily Strong before Che joined up in 2015. The two have since been the face of the “Weekend Update” segment and were recently appointed as two of the head writers for the show.

“We’re proud to be the first duo hosting the Emmys since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce, and somehow that’s a real fact,” said Jost and Che. Elfman and Pierce hosted the Emmys in 1999, so it had definitely been a long time.

SNL took home nine Emmys last season, the most of any show that season. This season will likely see multiple nominations again.

“We are elated that Colin Jost and Michael Che will bring their hilarious collective talents to hosting this year’s Emmy Awards,” said Hayma Washington, Television Academy chairman and CEO. “They have an amazing onscreen rapport and we are delighted to begin working with them along with the entire NBC team.”

The Emmys will air live from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 17 from 8-11 p.m. ET on NBC. Nominations will be announced on July 12.

It’s hard to predict this early who and what will receive nominations, but it strikes us as likely The Crown, Westworld, This Is Us and The Handmaid’s Tale will be among that number. Keep an eye out for Laura Dern’s performance in The Tale, in particular, to nab a nomination. In a perfect world, we’d love to see Darren Criss from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story snag a nomination, as well, but only time will tell.
