HBO Leads Television Critics Association Awards with 12 Nominations

TV News

On Aug. 6, the Television Critics Association, made up of more than 200 industry journalists and writers, will hand out awards to honor “outstanding achievements in television and enduring contributions to the medium’s heritage” during the 23rd annual TCA Awards Ceremony. Jane the Virgin’s Rogelio de la Vega will serve as the night’s host.

Currently, HBO leads the pack with 12 total nominations, including Program of the Year (Game of Thrones), Outstanding Achievement in Drama (Game of Thrones, The Leftovers), Outstanding Achievement in Comedy (Veep, Silicon Valley), Outstanding Achievement in News and Information (Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, Real Time With Bill Maher) and more.

FX is not far behind with 11 total nominations, including Outstanding Achievement in Movies, Miniseries and Specials (Fargo, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Outstanding Achievement in Drama (The Americans) and three nominations for Program of the Year (The Americans, Fargo, and The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story).

Netflix, surprisingly, is a distant third with just six total nominations. Three of those went to the Aziz Ansari-starring Master of None, two (including Program of the Year) went to true-crime docuseries Making a Murderer and just one went to Marvel’s Jessica Jones.

Two programs are currently tied for most nominations, with both USA’s Mr. Robot and FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story holding four.

In addition to current programs, the TCA is bestowing the Heritage Award “to one long-standing program that has had a major cultural or social impact.” This year’s Heritage Award nominees are absolute pop-cultural heavyweights, including The Larry Sanders Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Seinfeld, Star Trek and Twin Peaks.
