New on HBO Now: All the Movies and TV Coming in August

August is one of the great transition months of the year. The summer starts to cool off, school starts back up, the content on your streaming services change. If HBO’s incoming slate for August shows anything, it’s that the network is still in a transitional state, working overtime to figure out how to recover from the maligned ending of Game of Thrones, the surprise success of Chernobyl and the Gen Z controversies of its latest original series, Euphoria. Let’s dive in.

While the school where he used to work as one of two Vice Principals may no longer exist, Danny McBride can’t stay away from HBO for too long. His new comedy series with Workaholics’ Adam Devine and the always-welcome John Goodman is The Righteous Gemstones (Aug. 18), which follows the titular family of Christian televangelists sinning and making money under the direction of Pineapple Express’ David Gordon Green. There’s the premiere of the network’s latest sketch show, A Black Lady Sketch Show (Aug. 2), which features the incredibly funny Robin Thede, Ashley Nicole Black, Gabrielle Dennis and Quinta Brunson in its cast. There’s also the premiere of Los Espookys star Julio Torres’ comedy special, My Favorite Shapes with Julio Torres, which has plenty of oddball figurines and dioramas that the comedian has collected during various encounters with celebrities. It’s not all funny business, though, as August also sees the return of family-business drama Succession (Aug. 11), which has one of the most exquisitely slimy characters on television currently. And while the school year may be just beginning for most, it’s ending for Euphoria’s freshman year on Aug. 4, and Divorce is mutually splitting up from the network come Aug. 5.

If you’re going to be hitting the beach one last time this summer, might we recommend a pre-swim viewing of Aquaman? The Jason Momoa-starring superhero flick was certainly better than it could’ve been, and it’ll be hitting HBO’s library on Aug. 10. If you want something artsier, more award-winning, then you’ll be happy to hear that Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning period drama The Favourite will be on the service on Aug. 3. Olivia Colman stars as Queen Anne, who sees some bureaucratic courting and romantic power plays from co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. And while we were wild about the spectacle of that film, we were less sure of Boy Erased (Aug. 2), which stars Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman in the story of a gay conversion camp. Cult classic The Lost Boys (Aug. 1) is here to remind you that, yes, leather jackets will always be hot, while some of the styles seen on Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo in the mid-’00s rom-com Just Like Heaven (Aug. 1) haven’t aged as well. If you’ve ever wondered what Star Wars co-writer Lawrence Kasdan’s directorial stylings are like, you’re in luck, as his 1981 thriller Body Heat (Aug. 1) is also coming to the service.

However, August also means saying bye to your summertime friends, and there’s plenty departing HBO’s slate this month. Goodbye, Shrek 2—maybe we’ll see you again next summer!—and good riddance Tag, hope to never see you again.
