Set in 1973, the 10-episode limited series will focus heavily on the family tensions and “the corrosive power of money,” per a press release. John Paul Getty III, heir to the Getty oil fortune, is kidnapped in Rome. His mafia captors are banking on a pretty sweet ransom, but to their surprise and frustration, no one seems particularly interested in saving Paul—except for his determined (but also totally broke) mother. Paul’s father is too doped up on heroin to make a move, and his mega-rich grandfather (played by Donald Sutherland) is chilling out in a fancy house with five mistresses.
Production is set to start in London and Rome in June, with an FX premiere date of January 2018. Trust boasts Simon Beaufoy as its head writer and Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) as its director and executive producer, and that alone is more than enough to get us to pay attention. Don’t miss our 2013 Paste feature “Danny Boyle: Jack of All Genres,” in which Boyle discusses James McAvoy, women in cinema and the Olympics.
