Hulu comedy Such Brave Girls is almost undoubtedly one of the best shows you’re not watching. Or heck, that you probably haven’t even heard of. Let me help: A desperately unhinged and wildly funny British import, this briskly paced, chaotic, and generally unquantifiable story follows three members of a dysfunctional family as they wrestle with mental health problems, relationship drama, financial woes, and lingering abandonment issues. Bleak, biting, and often uncomfortably cringe, the show’s leads are generally unlikeable and its general premise pushes the boundaries of what comedy is supposed to be and do. And still, it’s great.
Much of Such Brave Girls works because of the phenomenal chemistry between its stars, Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. The real-life siblings, who play sisters Josie and Billie onscreen, have a uniquely bizarre interpersonal style, charming, weird, slightly cutting, and hilarious all at once. So perhaps it’s best to let them speak for themselves, which is what this exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette from Hulu aims to do. It’s maybe the strangest promotional video for a show you’ll ever see—but it also perfectly captures what makes both Such Brave Girls and its stars so appealing.
In keeping with the slightly weird and out-there reputation of the show itself, the interview takes place almost entirely in the bath. As those of you who have seen the show are already aware, the bathroom is essentially a sacred space in the world of Such Brave Girls, where heartfelt confessions are shared, deep anxieties are revealed, and many (many) poor decisions are made, doubled down on, and worse. In keeping with the offbeat nature of their setting, the series’ stars pose the sort of questions to one another that they rarely get from journalists, on topics ranging from worst school haircuts to which parent loved each sibling best.
The same dry wit that infuses the series is evident throughout, and Sader and Davidson shine as the line between their genuine selves and their onscreen characters gets awfully blurry. (I’m just saying that most of their answers could easily pass for dialogue on this show, is all.)
Watch for yourselves below (and don’t let the extremely normal-looking thumbnail fool you).
Such Brave Girls Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on Hulu.
