John Legend to Produce New WGN Show About “Black Wall Street”

TV News John Legend

John Legend will be the executive producer of a new series focusing on the true story of “Black Wall Street,” as TheWrap first reported. With the series still in its early stages of development, Legend is working with his Get Lifted production team, along with Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Southside With You star Tika Sumpter.

“Black Wall Street” is a name given to the Tulsa, Okla. neighborhood of Greenwood, which was one of the wealthiest and most affluent African-American communities in the U.S. during the early 20th century. However, in 1921, a race riot broke out in which white citizens destroyed most of the neighborhood and killed more than 300 black civilians. The massacre remains one of the most significant events in Tulsa’s history—you can learn more about it here.

Legend, who is currently an executive producer for WGN’s Underground, is still relatively new in his ventures with TV. But Paste favorite Underground has had huge success with the network, promising good things to come with whatever Legend produces next.

Per Deadline, Legend’s as-yet-untitled Black Wall Street series may debut in 2018 if picked up to series.
