Lena Headey Wasn’t Entirely Pleased with Cersei’s Fate on Game of Thrones

You aren’t alone if you felt a little bit disappointed by the ending of the beloved HBO series Game of Thrones. While some weren’t actually bothered by the show’s conclusion, many fans across the world were heartbroken by how certain plot points were tied up (or just abandoned) and how certain characters met their fates. Even Lena Headey, who played long-running villain and dastardly foe Cersei Lannister, wished it had all ended differently for the now-former queen of Westeros.

During an interview with The Guardian, Headey was asked her thoughts about the show’s ending and if she’d had the chance to discuss it with GOT showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

“I invested as a viewer and I have my favourite characters. And I’ve got a few of my own gripes. But I haven’t sat down drunkly with David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] yet,” the actress said.

“I will say I wanted a better death,” Headey added, “Obviously you dream of your death. You could go in any way on that show. So I was kind of gutted. But I just think they couldn’t have pleased everyone. No matter what they did, I think there was going to be some big comedown from the climb.”

For years, “Throners” speculated on how the villainous Cersei would meet her end. Many hoped it would be something gruesome to serve as comeuppance for her past transgressions, but those people were saddened when it ultimately ended in the evil queen being crushed by an anticlimactic pile of rubble with her brother-lover Jaime.

While Game of Thrones will not return to our television screens, we can only hope that George R.R. Martin gives Cersei a more befitting death in the final Song of Ice and Fire books once (if?) they eventually come out.
