The 5 New and Under-the-Radar Shows You Can’t Miss In January

Should auld TV shows be forgot and never brought to mind?

Of course not! But we here at Paste TV are happy to click our remote and change the channel to a new year. It’s time to leave behind the year that saw two industry strikes and look ahead to a bright TV future. Even if all the streamers are starting to show commercials (has the phrase everything old is new again ever been more apt?), we are making a New Year’s resolution to be positive about the state of the TV industry.

There are so many new shows premiering this month. And Paste will be covering Sofia Vergara’s return to TV as the title character in Netflix’s Griselda (January 26th), Jodie Foster and Kali Reis heading up a new season of Max’s True Detective (January 14th), Ryan Murphy once again taking on infamous rivalries in FX’s FEUD: Capote Vs. The Swans (January 31st), and so much more.

But as we kick off 2024, we don’t want you to miss a thing. Here are the five new shows you can’t miss this month.

Fool Me Once

Stars:  Michelle Keegan, Adeel Akhtar, Richard Armitage, and Joanna Lumley

Premiere Date:  All eight episodes premiere January 1st on Netflix

I was trying to count up how many new series Netflix is premiering this month and I just stopped when I got to 10. Netflix is going to Netflix. Will the streamer that started it all stop being a content farm in 2024? Probably not. But you will still be able to find treasures and enjoyable diversions amid the litany of content they dump onto their platform. Based on the Harlen Coben novel of the same name, this eight-episode series follows Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) who is still reeling from the murder of her husband Joe (Richard Armitage) when she sees her thought-to-be-very-dead husband on her nanny cam. Has Maya’s grief made her lose touch with reality? Or are her friends and loved ones trying to convince her that she is crazy?

Grimsburg

Stars:  Jon Hamm, Erinn Hayes, Rachel Dratch, Alan Tudyk, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Greg Chun

Premiere Date: January 7th at 8 p.m. on FOX

Can we pause for a moment and just reflect on the roles Jon Hamm has played in just the last year? He was a dastardly Elon Musk-type corporate executive in The Morning Show, the Archangel Gabriel on Good Omens, and is currently the ever so creepy Roy Tillman on Fargo. Not to mention that you can also catch him in the upcoming Mean Girls movie. His career is going pretty great, Bob! Now Hamm is going the animation route in the new FOX comedy Grimsburg as Marvin Flute (Hamm), a detective who returns to the town of Grimsburg to reconcile with his fellow detectives, his ex-wife (Erinn Hayes), and his son (Rachel Dratch).

Criminal Record

Stars:  Peter Capaldi, Cush Jumbo, Charlie Creed-Miles, Dionne Brown, Shaun Dooley, Stephen Campbell-Moore, Zoë Wanamaker Maureen, Rasaq Kukoyi, Maisie Ayres, Aysha Kala, Cathy Tyson, and Tom Moutchi

Premiere Date: The first two episodes premiere January 10th on AppleTV+ with new episodes weekly

A TV show starring The Doctor and Lucca Quinn? What more could you want? This eight episode series follows two London detectives—the seasoned Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) and the new-to-the-position June Lenker (Cush Jumbo). After a woman makes an emergency call saying that her life is in danger, the detectives are drawn into an old murder case that Hegarty investigated more than a decade ago. What is Hegarty hiding? Lenker is determined to find out in this taut thriller.

A Real Bug’s Life

Stars:  Awkwafina

Premiere Date: All five episodes premiere January 24th on Disney+

In 1998, Disney gave us an animated look into the lives of creepy crawly creatures with Pixar’s A Bug’s Life. Now, more than 25 years later, viewers are getting treated to the real deal. This five-episode series, narrated by comedian Awkwafina, takes a deep dive into nine different micro bug worlds. First up: a “fiercely territorial” New York City-based jumping spider who faces both small and large foes. Amazing camera work brings you up close to these often misunderstood creatures. This fascinating series may even make you feel sympathetic towards a cockroach.

Chrissy & Dave Dine Out

Stars:  Chrissy Teigen, David Chang, and Joel Kim Booster

Premiere Date:  January 24th at 10 p.m. on Freeform

Chrissy Teigen, restaurateur David Chang, and comedian/actor Joel Kim Booster take going out to dinner to a whole new level in this new Freeform series. Each week Teigen and Booster chat up their famous celebrity friends while Chang goes into the kitchen to learn the restaurant’s secrets to success. “I know everyone in America is like who is this? Where is John Legend?” Booster jokes as the series begins. First up, Jimmy Kimmel and his wife Molly McNearney eat at Chris Bianco’s new LA restaurant, Pizzeria Bianco. Future celebrities include Reid Scott, Kumail Nanjiani, Regina Hall, and Simu Liu. Teigen and Booster’s innately affable nature keeps the conversation flowing in this entertaining series that is guaranteed to make your mouth water.
