Melissa McCarthy to Return to Stars Hollow for Gilmore Girls Reunion

After a very public back-and-forth about whether The Boss star Melissa McCarthy would be returning for Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival, it’s been revealed that a deal has indeed been brokered for a Sookie St. James appearance in Stars Hollow.

During an interview with Gilmore Girls showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino, Entertainment Weekly reported that shooting on the revival was scheduled to last until May 10. Sherman-Palladino spoke then about the potential for McCarthy’s return and the efforts she’d take to make that happen.

“I know what the scene is. I’ll pre-light it for her,” Sherman-Palladino said. “She can drive up, run in, shoot it and run out. I can get her in and out in two hours. If she finds that time, I don’t care when it is, we will make it happen.”

And it looks like they did. Lorelai’s best friend and the Dragonfly Inn’s beloved chef, Sookie St. James, will officially return in all her sweet, funny and endearing glory. The Ghostbusters and Mike and Molly star personally announced her reprisal of the role on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

During her talk show appearance, McCarthy took the time to clarify why the negotiations for her role in the revival took so long.

“There has something I’ve been asked about so, so many times, and it hasn’t worked out,” McCarthy shared with the Ellen Show audience. “They’re making four new movies of the Gilmore Girls, which is a show that was near and dear to my heart for four years, and we could not get those schedules to work,” McCarthy told DeGeneres. “There was a whole thing, and then I was going to be out of the country, and literally about an hour and a half ago, we figured out that I’m going to go back and do it, and I am so excited! They’re going to be amazing.”
