One of the best crowd-funded movies we’ve ever reviewed has gained new life, as Justin Simien’s Dear White People has been ordered straight-to-series by Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Simien is on board to write the series and direct the first episode, which will air some time in 2017. It’s unclear as of right now whether the original cast of the movie will return, but the story will be much the same: students of color making their way through the “post-racial” (but not really) landscape of a prestigious, mostly white Ivy League-type college. It’s a story that’s not often told when it comes to college-centric film and television, and if it matches the humor and poignancy of the source material, the Dear White People series will be appointment watching.
