Written by Brand in a continuation of the original series, the revival will follow Morrow’s Dr. Joel Fleischman as he returns to Cicely, Alaska, for the funeral of an old friend, encountering a new set of quirky characters and reuniting with some old ones.
The original series ran on CBS for 110 episodes from 1990-1995, during which time the show picked up a devoted cult following. In 2016, Northern Exposure also landed at No. 2 on Paste’s list of the top 10 funniest TV dramas.
Morrow will executive produce with Ben Silverman, and co-creators Brand and Falsey, while actor John Corbett, who starred with Morrow as ex-con radio host Chris Stevens in the original series, will produce for Universal TV.
If the Northern Exposure revival passes muster and earns itself a pilot order, it will join Murphy Brown at CBS, which premiered that sitcom revival this TV season.
The original Northern Exposure series is currently unavailable to stream on all streaming platforms, and there’s no news yet of whether CBS will bring back the original show to stream on any platforms, including CBS All Access.
