Oprah Winfrey Will Interview the Exonerated Five for Netflix Special

Oprah Winfrey will interview the Exonerated Five for a special focused on Ava DuVernay’s miniseries When They See Us, set to debut on Netflix and OWN on June 12, the networks announced Friday.

Winfrey, who served as an executive producer on the series (and is objectively its biggest fan), will moderate two panels for the forthcoming Oprah Winfrey Presents When They See Us Now special, one with the cast of DuVernay’s When They See Us, and the second with the director and the men previously labeled the “Central Park Five”: Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise.

The two panels are scheduled to act as the closing event to Netflix’s FYSEE circuit, a promotional series that presents panels on Netflix Originals to Emmy voters, and will take place on June 9. It’s rare for a panel to be filmed and released to the public, which gives the series a one-up and slight edge during Emmy season.

When They See Us, which follows the wrongful conviction of five black and brown teenagers for the sexual assault of a white female jogger in 1989, debuted to much acclaim last week and has already been making waves.

Oprah Winfrey Presents When They See Us Now will debut on June 12 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
