Disney has announced that singer and actress Andra Day has been cast as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, for the upcoming second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on Rick Riordan’s bestselling books. As Athena, Day will step into the role of the formidable Goddess of Wisdom, who is also the mother of Annabeth Chase (played by Leah Jeffries). The series’ first season premiered in December of 2023.
“I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors,” Day shared in a video statement via the Percy Jackson Instagram. “Stay tuned for this epic journey, y’all.”
In 2021, Day received an Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Since then, she starred opposite André Holland (Moonlight) in Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness and led Lee Daniels’ The Deliverance, now on Netflix. As a musician, Day has received three Grammy Award nominations and released her album CASSANDRA (cherith) in May.
Previously announced new cast members for Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians include Daniel Diemer (Under the Bridge) as Tyson, Percy’s cyclops half-brother. Tamara Smart (Resident Evil) will play Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. The Gray Sisters, a quirky trio of mythical women, will be played by Sandra Bernhard (Pose), Kristen Schaal (What We Do in the Shadows), and Margaret Cho (Hacks). Jeffries will reprise her role as Annabeth alongside Walker Scobell as Percy Jackson, Aryan Simhadri as Grover, and Charlie Bushnell as Luke.
Season 2 will follow the events of The Sea of Monsters, Riordan’s second book in the series. The season is set to premiere in 2025.
