Rejoice, For Underground Has Been Renewed For a Second Season

TV News

One of the year’s most underrated and best series to date, WGN America’s Underground, has apparently been catching more eyes than just ours. The network announced today that the show would be renewed for a second season, set to premiere in 2017.

“With enormous pride we are announcing a second season of Underground, a series that has resonated with so many passionate fans across the country,” said Matt Cherniss, President and GM of WGN America, in a statement. “We are deeply proud of the work that the talented cast, crew and production team have done to bring this story to life, led by our gifted creators Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and our partners at Sony Pictures Television. It is an honor to have Underground on our air and we look forward to how the story will unfold in what is sure to be a stellar sophomore season.”

In case you haven’t been following our own Shannon Houston’s extensive coverage of the show, Underground tells the story of revolutionaries and escaped slaves on their perilous journey north. There’s so much to unpack in this groundbreaking series, and we’re thrilled that we’ll have another season’s worth of episodes to cherish and dissect. Hopefully, other critics and viewers will take a hint.

Underground is still a ways from wrapping up its first season; a new episode is set to premiere this Wednesday evening at 10 p.m. EST, and there will be an all-day marathon of the show on WGN America preceding the season finale on May 11.
