Netflix Renews Sex Education for Season Two
Photo by Sam Taylor/NetflixThe hit Netflix teen comedy series Sex Education has been renewed for a second season, the streamer announced Friday. Production on the follow-up run of eight episodes will begin this spring in the U.K. with the entire cast returning and creator Laurie Nunn continuing as showrunner. Nunn will executive produce the second season alongside Jamie Campbell, and Eleven will continue as the show’s production company.
The raunchy but heartwarming U.K. series follows sexually frustrated teen Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) as he decides to open a sex therapy clinic for his classmates using tips he picked up from his mother (Gillian Anderson)—an actual professional sex therapist. Naturally, hijinks ensue as Otis, his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and rebellious outcast Maeve (Emma Mackey) attempt to navigate their new positions at school and at home.
The show’s first season was met with widespread critical acclaim and maintains a 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a rare move, Netflix also revealed some of the viewership data for the show, claiming in a quarterly earning report that 40 million households tuned in to Sex Education in its first four weeks on the service.
“Laurie Nunn has captured the awkward teenage experience with a lot of heart and humor in Sex Education,” said Cindy Holland, the VP of Original Content for Netflix, in a statement. “Along with the Eleven team and executive producer and director Ben Taylor, she’s created a universally relatable series that has resonated with our members around the world.”
“The reception to season one has been so exciting,” Nunn said. “Seeing how people across the world have connected to characters that began as ideas in my head is incredible. I’m hugely grateful to every person that has taken the time to watch the series, and I can’t wait to continue this amazing journey.”
