Watch the Trailer for Lena Waithe and Common’s Showtime Series The Chi

Showtime has released the first trailer for The Chi and it practically pulses with energy.

The project, created by Master of None’s Lena Waithe, is a coming-of-age story that follows several interlinked residents of the South Side of Chicago. And Waithe has gathered an incredibly exciting cast to play those residents: Straight Outta Compton’s Jason Mitchell, Moonlight’s Alex Hibbert, The Queen of Katwe’s Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Sleight’s Jacob Latimore, The Following’s Tiffany Boone and many others. And there’s talent behind the camera, as well—joining Waithe is Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa to direct the premiere episode. Also, did we mention Common is executive producing?

The trailer, which thrums along to Raury’s “Devil’s Whisper,” names its main characters in succession. Check out their stories in the official synopsis below:

Kevin (Hibbert) is the pre-teen who must step past shattered illusions and embrace the normal rites of childhood, while Brandon (Mitchell) the dreamer makes his own nearly impossible leap of faith to succeed in life and love with girlfriend Jerrika (Boone). Emmett (Latimore) is the carefree teen is thrust into complex responsibility with guidance from his mother Jada (Ross), and Ronnie (Mwine) is the drifter whose struggle to love and be loved calls into question his every pursuit.

All-star cast. Colorful photography. Good music. Talent behind the camera. Check out The Chi on Jan. 7 on Showtime at 10 p.m. EDT.
