Based on 1982’s The Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance tells a new story set many years before the original film, combining classic puppetry with cutting-edge visual effects.
The series has been in the works for quite some time, with a teaser released back in May 2017 giving fans a glimpse into the intricate puppetry work involved in bringing The Dark Crystal’s world to life.
Netflix’s official synopsis for the series reads as follows:
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance returns to the world of Thra with an all new adventure. When three Gelfling discover the horrifying secret behind the Skeksis’ power, they set out on an epic journey to ignite the fires of rebellion and save their world.
Leading Age of Resistance are Taron Egerton (the Kingsman series), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones), as Rian, Brea and Deet, three Gelfling heroes. Netflix shared first looks of the three leads as the first images from the forthcoming series.
The stacked cast of Age of Resistance also includes Gelfling characters voiced by Helena Bonham-Carter, Natalie Dormer, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Eddie Izzard, Alicia Vikander and Egerton’s Kingsman co-star Mark Strong. The Skeksis & Mystics are voiced by Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan Michael-Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg and Andy Samberg, while Aughra is voiced by Donna Kimball. Puppeteers who are also voicing additional characters include Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid.
“It is humbling to see so many truly gifted actors join The Dark Crystal universe by adding their voices to Age of Resistance,” said Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company, in a statement. “It is thrilling to see this assembled team of artists, puppeteers and now voice actors, many inspired by my father’s original film, work together to realize this unique world—through performance and craft—at a scale that is rarely seen today.”
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will launch globally on Netflix sometime in 2019.
