Netflix Shares First Look at Henry Cavill in The Witcher Series

Netflix has shared a first-look photo featuring Henry Cavill in The Witcher, a television adaptation of the bestselling fantasy novel series by Andrzej Sapkowski. On Instagram Wednesday, Cavill also shared a video featuring himself in costume as monster slayer Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series, which is set to begin production in Hungary.

Cavill was cast in The Witcher in early September, days before reports revealed that the star was out as Superman in the troubled DC Extended Universe, for which he most recently appeared in last year’s commercial disappointment Justice League. The Witcher marks Cavill’s first television role since Showtime’s The Tudors ended in 2010.

While the first-look photo only partially teases Cavill’s Geralt of Rivera, we do see him in a grey wig, taking a swig from a flask in the full video.

The Witcher cast now includes Eamon Farren (The ABC Murders, Twin Peaks) as Cahir, Joey Batey (Knightfall, Strike) as Jaskier, Lars Mikkelsen (House of Cards, Sherlock) as Stregobor, Royce Pierreson (Wanderlust, Judy) as Istredd, Maciej Musia? (1983) as Sir Lazlo, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte (Jamillah & Aladdin, Dickensian) as Dara and Anna Shaffer (Harry Potter) as Triss.

Previously announced cast members include leading ladies Freya Allan (Into the Badlands) as Ciri, and Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as the sorceress Yennefer, Geralt’s love interest and Ciri’s mother figure. They are joined by Jodhi May (Game of Thrones, Genius) as Queen Calanthe, Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson (Fortitude) as knight Eist, Adam Levy (Knightfall, Snatch) as druid Mousesack, MyAnna Buring as Aretuza magical academy head Tissaia, Mimi Ndiweni and Therica Wilson-Read as novice sorcerers, and Millie Brady as outcast Princess Renfri.

The Witcher starts shooting in Hungary this week, and according to the video on Cavill’s Instagram, is “coming 2019” to Netflix.
