The 5 New and Under-the-Radar TV Shows You Can’t Miss in February

The 5 New and Under-the-Radar TV Shows You Can’t Miss in February

As has become my annual tradition, in honor of Valentine’s Day, I give you my love poem to television.

Roses are red, violets are blue,
I love TV and I know you do too.

February has so much from which to choose
But definitely don’t miss out on Disney+ Win or Lose.
Binging or watching weekly, I love it all
Especially SNL celebrating its 50th anniversary from Radio City Music Hall.

Will Suits LA still have that same sparkle?
It will have Harvey and Stephen Amell but no Megan Markle.

This month Natasha Rothwell and White Lotus return for more.
And after the Super Bowl you can catch Rob Lowe and a special episode of The Floor.

So many beloved TV stars are back, there’s no need to frown.
Make sure to watch Paradise with Sterling K. Brown.
It’s still great to have Noah Wyle back in The Pitt.
But what will be the next surprise hit?

Alas, this month will say a big goodbye
To Daniel, Johnny, and the kids of Cobra Kai.
But fret not, of new series there are many;
Here are the five new ones you can’t miss this February.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Stars:  Kaitlyn Dever, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Aisha Dee, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, Ashley Zukerman, Mark Coles Smith, Susie Porter, Matt Nable , Phoenix Raei, Chai Hansen, Richard Davies, Kieran Darcy-Smith , Catherine McClements and Essie Davis

Premiere Date:  All six episodes premiere February 6 on Netflix

This six episode Netflix series is based on a doozy of a story.  As Apple Cider Vinegar tells viewers at the outset, “this is a true story based on a lie.” Belle Gibson (Kaitlyn Dever) used Instagram to become a wellness influencer with millions of followers and create a successful global health business. There were books, apps and products all based on her claim that she cured herself of terminal brain cancer by changing her diet. The only problem was she never had cancer… of any kind. Belle is in competition with Milla Blake (Alycia Debnam-Carey), another wellness influencer, who actually did have cancer. Filmed on location in Melbourne, Australia and based on the book The Woman Who Fooled the World by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano, the series proves that the truth really is stranger than fiction.

2. Clean Slate

Stars:  Laverne Cox, George Wallace, D.K. Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkin, Jay Wilkison, and Norah Murphy

Premiere Date:  All eight episodes premiere February 6 on Prime Video

The legendary Norman Lear passed away in December of 2023 at the age of 101. But his impact on the television landscape lives on, not just in his iconic sitcoms like All in the Family and Good Times but in this new series. Before his passing, Lear served as an executive producer of Clean Slate and the comedy starts off by quoting him—“The laughter I’ve enjoyed the most is the laughter that has brought numbers of us together.” As is typical in a Lear TV series, this one is also groundbreaking. Laverne Cox stars as Desiree, a trans woman who returrns home to try to repair her relationship with her estranged father Harry (George Wallace) who she hasn’t seen in 23 years. Cox and Wallace are delightful (as is the strong supporting cast) and the series is simultaneously heartfelt and hilarious. Lear’s legend lives on.

3. Best Interests

Stars:  Sharon Horgan, Michael Sheen and Niamh Moriarty

Premiere Date: All four episodes premiere February 17 on Acorn TV

Sharon Horgan and Michaeel Sheen star as Nicci and Andrew, parents of  Marnie (Niamh Moriarty), a teenager with a rare form of muscular dystrophy. When Marnie’s doctors advise that her condition has deteriorated to the point they should stop treatment, Nicci and Andrew find themselves at odds with the doctors who have cared so lovingly for their daughter. Horgan, perhaps known for her work on series like Catastrophe and Bad Sisters, gives a heart-wrenching performance. The series premiered across the pond on BBC One back in June 2023 where it was nominated for a BAFTA Award for best limited series and Horgan was nominated for Best Actress.

4. The Americas

Stars:  Tom Hanks

Premiere Date:  Two hour premiere February 23 at 7 p.m. on NBC

The team behind Planet Earth and Blue Planet returns with this 10 episode series. Narrated by Tom Hanks, The Americas took five years to make and involved over 180 expeditions. The first episode, “The Atlantic Coast,” goes up and down the eastern seaboard to uncover lesser known details and fun facts about the wild horses who live in the Outer Banks and the bald eagles who defied odds to thrive in Chesapeake Bay. Future episodes include “Mexico,” “The Wild West,” “The Amazon,” “The Frozen North,” “The Gulf Coast,” “The Andes,” “The Caribbean,” “The West Coast” and “Patagonia.”

5. Running Point

Stars:  Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, Justin Theroux, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Dane DiLiegro

Premiere Date:  All 10 episodes premiere February 27 on Netflix

Kate Hudson headlines this new basketball comedy which boasts Mindy Kaling as an executive producer. Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the daughter of a famed basketball family who has been constantly overlooked. When her older brother (Justin Theroux) gets into trouble and goes to rehab, he makes Isla the president of the LA Waves. Now Isla, assisted by her best friend Ali (Brenda Song), must prove to everyone that she’s up for the job. It’s a big TV month for the Hanks family. Keep an eye out for Chet Hanks (the son of Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson) as Travis, a talented basketball player with a less than ideal attitude. Jeanie Buss, Los Angeles Lakers president and co-owner, and Linda Rambis, the Laker’s manager of special projects, also serve as executive producers, lending the series authenticity.
