FXX Announces Premiere Date for Final Season of Anti-Romantic Comedy You’re the Worst

Say goodbye to FXX’s anti-romantic comedy, You’re the Worst: The critically acclaimed series’ fifth and final season is coming in January, FX Networks announced on Monday, also sharing a trailer for the show’s last installment.

From writer and executive producer Stephen Falk, You’re the Worst puts a dark twist on the usually light romantic comedy genre. The show is a modern look at love and happiness, as told by two people who haven’t found much success in either.

The series follows Jimmy (Chris Geere), a narcissistic writer, and Gretchen (Aya Cash), a self-destructive Los Angeles PR executive. After a crazed courtship—in which the couple learned to navigate Gretchen’s clinical depression and Jimmy’s grief from losing his father—Jimmy and Gretchen are in it for the long haul. Well, at least Jimmy proposed, ditched and then returned to Gretchen, and the sometimes-happy couple is finally somewhat ready to tie the knot.

But just because Jimmy and Gretchen are getting married doesn’t mean they’ve changed from the quirky characters that were introduced in the first season. “We have the best love story,” Jimmy remarks in the new season five trailer, “because ours is ugly and uncomfortable.”

You’re the Worst was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016, and the series earned a TCA Award nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy in 2016.

The fifth and final season of You’re the Worst will premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FXX. Check out the season five trailer below.
