50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time

As we began to compile this list of the 50 Best Bob Dylan Covers of All Time—asking for input from Paste readers, writers and editors—someone suggested that it might be easier to compile a list of artists who haven't covered Dylan. I've listened to literally hundreds of Dylan covers over the course of the past week, trying to weigh choices like, "Who's version of 'Tomorrow Is a Long Time' is better, Nick Drake or Nickel Creek?" But I don't mean to make it sound like grueling work. My biggest take-away from this exercise is that going to Dylan for source...  read more

The Family Jams doc features Antony, Devendra, more

There are some things that just naturally make for good video footage. Shirtless men with big hair is one of them. Live shows featuring freak folk's best and brightest is another. Throw in a harp, some alcohol and a touring van, and you've got a promising documentary on your hands....  read more

Soundtrack of Our Lives Presents: The 2009 Album Cover of the Year

Animal Collective was an early contender for The 2009 Album Cover of the Year, sure. Black Lips made an admirable stab at it. Neko Case and Antony each turned in rather kick-ass submissions as well. But pardon us as we refuse to acknowledge that there are 10 more months left in the year, and instead proclaim this, the cover for Soundtrack of Our Lives' forthcoming record (March 3), Communion, The 2009 Album Cover of the Year....  read more

Lovefest blog

The Ancient Greeks had several words that can be translated as "love," but three were most commonly used. Eros refers to the romantic love celebrated February 14 and found in 97 percent of all popular music. Agape is the New Testament word Jesus used when he said, "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." That leaves the much-overlooked phileo, which can mean both, "I love the way my son refers to the dawn as ‘when the world started over'" and "I love way Arcade Fire begins 'Wake Up.'" It connotes a...  read more

Six Albums to Get Excited About in 2009

When I wrote my Five Movies to Get Excited About in 2009 list a couple weeks ago, ostensibly, I was providing a reader service. But really, I was getting as pumped up about those movies as anyone reading that post. In fact, I'm listening to Ready to Die right now, looking forward to taking in a showing of Notorious this weekend. Looking forward to stuff is fun, and it makes actually experiencing said stuff just that much more awesome (or, alternately, disappointing).Editing the news section of PasteMagazine.com also gets me hyped about forthcoming albums on a daily basis. From big...  read more
