For a four-month period when I was 20, my two best friends were 21. This enabled them to go see 21+ shows at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur and then mercilessly rub it in. One of the bands they kept raving about was a duo called Kristian & Andrew. They gave me a cassette, and I quickly got what they were hearing—even with just two guitars and vocals, the songs felt anthemic. It was arena folk, busting the seams of a tiny venue. I became a regular; Kristian Bush and Andrew Hyra became Billy Pilgrim, signed a record deal and had... read more

All I want for Christmas is a cohesive record As with Sugarland’s previous studio efforts, lead singer Jennifer Nettles suffers from a vocal identity crisis on the duo’s new holiday-themed Gold and Green. Does she want to be a saccharine adult-contemporary crooner (“Gold and Green”), a wailing gospel beacon (“Coming Home”) or the twangy country girl next door (“Nuttin’ For Christmas”)? Here, such shifts seem contrived, robbing Nettles of any relatable authenticity. What little sincerity the set has comes from Kristian Bush singing lead on “Maybe Baby (New Year’s Day)” and “Holly Jolly Christmas.” Unfortunately, the latter is all but... read more

The CMA Awards often reward music’s biggest and brightest stars. The underground heroes of the genre tend to go quietly into the night unnoticed (Justin Townes Earle, where art thou?), but who ever said these award shows had to be high concept? Rather, the CMAs offer a chance for the biggest names in country music to be recognized as, yes, the biggest names in country. And the names of the winners at last night’s ceremony don’t get much bigger in the land of 10-gallon hats.... read more

As we said in our Grammy Predictions, we have a love/hate relationship with the Grammys. But hey, we love music, so we're watching to see what happens. Could be a big year for Lil Wayne (did you see his interview with "Miss" Katie Couric?). Could be a controversial night if Coldplay's alleged Joe Satriani rip-off grabs some hardware ("Viva La Vida" by Coldplay and Satriani's "If I Could Fly"). But plenty of great artists are nominated (M.I.A., Allison Krauss/Robert Plant, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Daft Punk, Brazilian Girls....we could go on), so as always, it'll be worth watching, especially... read more
