Another Margaret Atwood Novel Is Coming to the Small Screen

Well, that’s another one in the bag for prolific author Margaret Atwood, who seems to now be the Shonda Rhimes of the literary world.

Entertainment giant Entertainment One has acquired the worldwide television rights to Atwood’s first novel The Edible Woman, Variety reports.

The Edible Woman follows a woman in a state of disarray after her boyfriend proposes to her. Soon after her engagement, she feels her body and self are becoming separated, and begins to violently reject food and the notion of pure womanhood. In a typical Atwoodian fashion, the novel is set at the beginning of the second-wave feminist movement, and explores major themes of consumerism and sexual identity.

Francine Zuckerman of Z Films and Karen Shaw of Quarterlife Crisis Productions will serve as executive producers on the project. No further details have been revealed.

The announcement marks the fourth adaptation of Atwood’s works for the small screen within the past three years, following Netflix’s Alias Grace miniseries, Hulu’s Emmy-winning The Handmaid’s Tale adaptation and Canada’s CBC TV’s adaptation of Atwood’s children’s book, Wandering Wenda and Widow Wallop’s Wunderground Washery. Paramount Television and Anonymous Content also announced in early 2018 that they have purchased the rights to adapt the author’s MaddAddam trilogy.
