Wanda Sykes Quits Roseanne After Roseanne’s Racist Tweet

Roseanne will have to find itself a new consulting producer. Wanda Sykes, who worked on the classic sitcom’s recent reboot, announced on Twitter that she wouldn’t be returning after Roseanne’s racist tweet from last night.

Known for her outspoken stand-up and for playing no-nonsense characters on shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Black-ish and her own sitcom Wanda at Large, Sykes would’ve made sense as a producer on a Roseanne reboot whose star hadn’t turned into a far right conspiracy theorist. With Roseanne’s very public descent into unrepentant Trumpism, capped off by her now-deleted racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, Sykes was clearly no longer comfortable working on the ABC show.

As a recurring actor on Black-ish, Sykes has actually worked on two ABC sitcoms that have seen political controversy this season. ABC, of course, pulled an episode of Black-ish from the schedule because it addressed the right wing outrage over NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. ABC wouldn’t let one show address an aspect of the culture wars that have increasingly taken over our country, but had no problem running an entire season of a show made by a woman who has signal boosted all manner of right wing conspiracy theories and partisan attacks on her Twitter account.

Roseanne is still scheduled to return to an ABC for an eleventh season, most likely in 2019.
