Sarah Silverman “Insanely Lucky to be Alive” After Week-Long Hospitalization

What she had thought to be just a sore throat actually sent Sarah Silverman to the ICU for a week.

The comedian wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday that she recently had a “freak case of epiglottitis” and is “insanely lucky to be alive.” Epiglottitis is a potentially life-threatening disease that occurs when the lid that covers your windpipe, the epiglottis, swells and obstructs air flow into the lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In the post, she also thanked her boyfriend Michael Sheen, family, friends and doctors for their support in the hospital.

Of course, because she’s Sarah Silverman, she threw in some jokes about her traumatic experience, including giving a note to a nurse that read “Do you live with your mother?” along with a drawing of a penis.
