Double Mignolaverse Preview: Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1954—The Black Sun #1 and B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #145

Comics News Mike Mignola

Though Hellboy creator Mike Mignola may be forearm-deep in canvasses of washed-out, elegiac beauty, his comic book cosmos continues to thrive. Tomorrow will witness the release of two massive chapters in the shared sandbox of universe-engulfing evil and the men/benevolent monsters who tirelessly keep it at bay. Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: 1954—The Black Sun #1 and B.P.R.D.: Hell On Earth #145 both offer game-change developments; the former captures the unexplored camaraderie of the demonic hero and the government agency that adopted him, resulting in a cool reflection of Golden Age comics and another opportunity to spend time with our favorite hellion before he went solo. Aside from the Hellboy proper title and its epilogue, Hellboy in Hell, B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth is the longest-running comic in the mythos. Mr. Mignola kindly asked we avoid spoilers, but all we can say is that tensions run high and sentient, Germanic ectoplasm makes the world a slightly safer place to sleep at night.
