7 Of Coachella’s Best Dressed Bands

Design Lists Coachella

Festival season is upon us and it’s about that time for Coachella to kick off. The two-weekend music and arts fest begins today and runs through April 20. Big names like OutKast, Ellie Goulding, Pharrell, Lorde, Arcade Fire and Calvin Harris lead in the lineup, but there are dozens of lesser-known faces that will be gracing the stages at Indio Valley.

Of course, one of the most exciting things about this season (apart from the music itself) is the fashion that unfolds. Coachella is a stomping ground for some of the most marvelous, wild and weirdly alluring fashion that we rarely see any other time of year (hello, flower crowns). And while we could spend an entire weekend watching cutoff and crochet-clad concert goers frolic under the sun, there are some serious style cues onstage to take note of.

We’ve rounded up seven of the most fashionable faces and groups that’ll be performing over the next couple of weekends. Keep reading to learn more and remember that, if you’ll be attending, stuffed animals are strictly (seriously) prohibited on the concert grounds.

1.Temples

The British band Temples is barely two years old, but their style suggests that they’ve stepped straight out of a time machine from the ‘60s. Muted fringed leather jackets, statement penchants and velvet shirts are evidence enough of their decades-past vibe, but it’s their wildly untamed tresses—especially lead singer James Edward Bagshaw’s—that dispel any notions that these men are of the millennial generation. Their first studio album Sun Structures, which dropped in February of this year, features psychedelic, guitar-heavy tracks that are reminiscent of earlier British invaders.

2. Chvrches

We hereby dub Lauren Mayberry the Queen of the Cat Eye. The fine black streaks, adorned with delicate dots, are a seemingly permanent fixture across the lids of Chvrches’ leading lady. Her dressed up eyes are quite festive compared to her casual yet flirty wardrobe, which includes staples like polka dotted tops, denim cutoffs over nylons and black leather jackets. Standing by her side are Iain Cook and Martin Doherty, who keep things casual in graphic tees and dark denim. And let’s not forget Martin Doherty’s cap collection. You heard their synth-y single “The Mother We Share,” off their debut album The Bones of What You Believe, on Jimmy Fallon last June.

3. Dum Dum Girls

On the cover of Dum Dum Girls’ latest album Too True, lead singer/songwriter Dee Dee Penny is wearing a Swarovski crystal-embellished mesh bodysuit from the Saint Laurent fall 2013 collection—nothing too out of the ordinary for the New York City-based rock quartet who are always coordinated, head to toe, in all-black ensembles. Lacey camisoles, plunging keyhole necklines, geometric patterned stockings and, well, basically anything else that comes in black are wardrobe essentials for these girls. Their easy-listening sounds, which are a bit more pop than they are rock, might be more approachable for the everyman than their vixen attire.

4. Haim

Sense of style must be heredity for the three Haim sisters who make up their namesake band. The girls keep California cool with accessories like oversized shades and black leather booties. Este, the eldest, favors circle skirts and dresses. Danielle, who’s three years younger, loves dark denim and leather on top. And the youngest, Alana, is often in cutoff shorts and a comfy tee. While there are some subtle style variances, all three rock lengthy locks. Their dance party-inducing music is a nod to ‘80s retro. If you watch any of Target’s latest ads, you’ll hear their song “Forever” from their debut studio album.

5. Saints Of Valory

This Texas-based band, named one of Billboard’s top unsigned artists of 2012, began making music back in 2008 while they were living in Brazil. Before gaining fame, they posted their songs on MySpace to try to gain the attention of labels. And it worked…eventually. After a couple of self-released albums, the band signed with Atlantic Records and came out with their debut studio album Possibilities last July. In flannel shirts, deep v-necks and skin-hugging jeans, there’s a whole lot to love about the lax style of these men. Here’s to four new faces for #mcm.

6. MS MR

Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow are the faces of New York-based indie pop band MS MR. The duo, who met at Vassar College, released their first studio album Secondhand Rapture last May. We can all agree that Max, with his coiffed blonde hair and bold graphic prints, is a handsome young man in his own right. But let’s be honest, he’s no match against his female counterpart. Lizzy’s stage style is never a disappointment. Midriff-bearing tops made of spandex, velvet and mesh are a commonality among outfits, as are funky pants. Our favorites: her Mickey Mouse spandex from last year’s Lovebox Festival. Of course, we’d be remiss not to mention her chameleon curls, which have been dyed every color of the rainbow…and neon green.

7. ZZ Ward

We’re suckers for a signature style piece and ZZ Ward’s fedoras are no exception. It’s a rare sight to see the Oregon-based rock singer sans hat. So much so, in fact, that if you run a Google search on her you’ll find that “ZZ Ward without hat” is one of the more common inquiries. We guess people are curious to see what’s under there? Probably just a few more inches of her silky blonde strands, guys. All in all, ZZ is pretty normcore in simple tanks, blazers and jeans, which is apparently on the cusp of cool these days. We’re not complaining. A person can only handle so much fringe in two weekends.
