Coca-Cola is Officially Bringing Back Hi-C Ecto Cooler

Drink News Coca-Cola

After Coca-Cola re-registered the famous trademark of Hi-C’s Ghostbusters tie-in drink Ecto Cooler back in September of 2015 and a mysterious prototype can hit eBay back at the end of February, speculation began to swirl about the return of the once-popular beverage.

Now, according to an official announcement from Coca-Cola, we can confirm that the slime-green, citrus-flavored juice will be hitting store shelves once again, in large part due to Paul Feig’s forthcoming Ghostbusters reboot, which stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth.

“Hi-C Ecto Cooler fueled a pop-culture phenomenon that is well remembered and beloved by fans to this day,” Charles Torrey, Coca-Cola’s vice president, said in the company’s statement. “Sony Pictures was extremely enthusiastic about bringing it back for this special occasion, and the timing of the upcoming Ghostbusters film made this the exact right time.”

The drink was originally released back in 1987 to go hand-in-marketing-hand with the movie franchise’s animated spin-off. Coca-Cola removed Slimer from the drink container’s logo in 1997 before retiring the “Ecto Cooler” label around 2001. The flavor itself wasn’t discontinued, however, until 2006, after undergoing several name changes, including Shoutin Orange Tangergreen and Crazy Citrus Cooler.

Fans will be able to grab their own sip of movie tie-in history, which features thermal ink printing technology that turns an eerie shade of slime green after being chilled, at select locations and major online retailers. “When we decided to re-launch Hi-C Ecto Cooler, we wanted to do more than bring back the nostalgic juice boxes everyone knows … we wanted to offer something new and fun to reward fans who passionately lobbied us to bring back their beloved brand,” said Shannon Richmond, Coca-Cola’s brand director.

The drink’s release will coincide with the general marketing push for the movie’s official premiere on July 15. That means Coca-Cola is making Hi-C Ecto Cooler available for purchase once again starting May 30 in 10-packs of six-ounce juice boxes or six- and 12-packs of 11.5-oz. aluminum cans. If you can’t wait until then, they are giving some away prior to the late May release date through a Facebook and Twitter contest.
