The Ghostbusters-inspired Slime Green Soda, Ecto Cooler, Is Making A Comeback

Remember that 1990s Ghostbusters animated spin-off The Real Ghostbusters? If so, you probably remember that awesome lime green slime-inspired soft drink that tied in with it.

If you were missing stacking your fridge shelf to shelf with the citrus flavored refresher, start clearing out those leftovers because Hi-C Ecto Cooler is making a comeback.

The soft drink originally created in 1987 by Coca-Cola to tie-in with the animated spin-off is back to go along with the upcoming Paul Feig reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig and Leslie Jones.

Fans first got wind of this blast from the past in September of 2015 when Coca-Cola re-registered the drink’s trademark. Since then, drinkers have been awaiting a formal announcement of its return to store shelves. No such announcement has come quite yet, but what appears to be a prototype of the drink’s new “can” (it was once in a box or jug) has appeared on eBay. Although the contents are devoid, the container is up for grabs until Sunday, Feb. 21 and has already reached over $200 in bids.

The item is listed by eBay seller Rkv-ent who is claiming that it belongs to a friend who received the item and “who used to work for a marketing company.”

Although the sugary concoction was formally discontinued after 2001, more than 10 years after the show went off the air, it never quite disappeared the way we think. Instead, it underwent several rebrands before its recipe was cracked by a group of Ghostbusters fans who shared it (for free) with the world. In 1997 Slimer, the main logo and tie-in image for the drink was removed from the bottling, and then in 2001 the name was changed to Shoutin’ Orange Tangergreen and then again in 2006 to Crazy Citrus Cooler before being officially discontinued. It was too good to miss though, so fan group “Ghostbusters Chicago Division” cooked up their own carbonated eco-plasm for you to make at home.
