A Deluxe Hardcover Edition of You Died: A Dark Souls Companion Has a Kickstarter Campaign

Three years ago Keza MacDonald and Jason Killingsworth (a former Paste games editor) co-wrote You Died: The Dark Souls Companion. (You can read our review from 2016 here.) The book analyzes Dark Souls’ place within the world of games and the larger culture, balancing criticism and narrative analysis with an exploration of the game’s development and how it was received by players and other game designers. It’s a comprehensive deep dive into Dark Souls as both a game and a cultural artifact, and one of the most thoughtful books about the medium. And it’s also currently the focus of a Kickstarter campaign to fund a limited run hardcover edition.

This new edition, which will be published by Tune & Fairweather, includes a variety of new features. It has a new, previously unpublished chapter, new illustrations, dozens of new in-game photographs in full color, and, of course, a beautifully designed new cover that’s almost as hard as the game itself.

The Kickstarter campaign offers a number of different options. The Gravelord Servant Edition is bound in leather and comes in its own coffin. The Way of White edition has an exclusive white cover with a gold foil emboss. Original posters by Andrew Hind, the book’s designer, are also available, along with a “rare piece of loot” known as the Copper Coin.

If you haven’t read You Died, this new edition is a fancy new opportunity to check it out. And if you already have, then perhaps you’ll want to own a smarty designed collector’s edition for whenever you feel like revisiting it.
