Nintendo Switch Dominates Hardware Sales in April; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tops the Charts

For the second month in a row, the Nintendo Switch is dominating the system hardware market—and its games are, too. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe took the crown for the top-selling game in April.

Per the NPD Group, a U.S.-based market research group, the Switch sold 280,000 units in the month of April alone, after its record-breaking launch in March with over 906,000 units sold in the U.S. While sales have slowed significantly, the system hasn’t lost all of its momentum.

Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been dethroned. With only two days worth of sales in April, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe took the cake last month with over 460,000 physical units sold. Add in digital sales, and Nintendo moved 550,000 units between April 28 and 29. That’s not counting global sales.

Other noteworthy titles include party-focused mini-game collection 1-2 Switch and co-op action-puzzler Snipperclips: Cut it Out, Together!.

It doesn’t look like Switch sales are going to be dying down anytime soon. This summer’s Switch lineup includes new IP ARMS and the return of surprise hit Splatoon with Splatoon 2. 3DS fans also have a lot to look forward to with the forthcoming releases of Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, Ever Oasis, Hey! Pikmin and Miitopia, as well as the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL.
