Cross-Play Is Coming to PlayStation 4, Starting with Fortnite

Fortnite is constantly talked about as one of the current biggest games in the world. Therefore, it only makes sense that PlayStation would implement cross-platform play—a feature that has been highly requested for years—because of Fortnite.

In a post shared on the official PlayStation site on Wednesday, Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 would finally offer cross-platform features through an open cross-play beta for Fortnite. The beta will run to test the performance of cross-platform play on PlayStation 4, which means that PlayStation 4 players will now be able to play with those who play Fortnite on Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows and Mac operating systems.

President and CEO of SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) John Kodera shared the company’s thoughts on the much-anticipated decision in a statement:

We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.

PlayStation will have more to say regarding the beta’s time-frame, as well as what this means for other titles, at a later time.
