Sony’s First 2024 State of Play Shows Off Death Stranding 2, Silent Hill 2, Ken Levine’s New Game, and More

Games News PlayStation

Sony has lifted the curtains on some of what we can expect in the near future for PlayStation at their first State of Play event for 2024. The stream highlighted about 40 minutes of trailers and reveals, including a look at the Silent Hill 2 remake’s gameplay, a PS5/PC Port for Until Dawn, a deeper look into Death Stranding 2 officially subtitled On The Beach, and more. Here’s everything Sony shared from January 2024’s State of Play.

Stellar Blade

State of Play started off with a new and stylish action game from developer Shift Up called Stellar Blade. There are very heavy NieR: Automata vibes with this one. Thanks to its post-apocalyptic setting, flashy combat, and attractive protagonist, this is sure to keep fans of that vein of game happy, myself included. Stellar Blade releases April 26, 2024.

Sonic X Shadow Generations

Sonic Team is bringing the beloved Sonic Generations to the ninth generation of consoles, not only with the original game, but with an all new additional chapter starring Shadow the Hedgehog harking back to his self-titled 2005 game. High speeds will be sought when the game releases this Autumn.

Zenless Zone Zero

The new action-RPG from Hoyoverse is set to be in development for PlayStation 5. There’s a colorful world with rich character designs, which fans of Genshin Impact are sure to appreciate. Unfortunately there is not a release date as it is still in current development, but veterans of Hoyoverse’s titles already have the siphon strapped to their bank accounts.

Foamstars

Square Enix’s squeaky clean take on Splatoon is set to launch next week on PlayStation Plus, and got a little spotlight here at State of Play. The trailer shows off new characters and modes to expect going into its launch.

Dave the Diver

Indie-hit Dave the Diver is diving onto PlayStation this April. State of Play also announced that Godzilla will be making his appearance to scar players from the ocean in May 2024. Very cool to see independent developers collaborate with big names like Godzilla—really, when you think about it, it doesn’t get much bigger than Godzilla.

V Rising

The isometric action game will be coming to PlayStation 5 this year. Originally launching in early access on PC in 2022, fans are sure to be happy that the game has come so far after its initial strong start selling a million copies within just a week. Now PlayStation gets to experience that same vampiric glory.

Silent Hill: The Short Message

Konami (who, yes, still make games, apparently) revealed a new free-to-play spin-off of the Silent Hill series called The Short Message. The game is available for download now, but be warned that it does include mature content such as attempted self-harm, so this is not a game for everyone.

Silent Hill 2

State of Play also gave us a combat trailer for the upcoming remake of the legendary survival horror classic, Silent Hill 2. We get to see James Sunderland proficient with 2x4s, a handgun, and a shotgun. Fans have spoken out about what’s been shown off, with the general consensus being “it needs some polish”. No release date/window has been revealed.

Judas

From Ken Levine, the creator of BioShock, we are given its spiritual successor in the form of Judas. It looks like a colorful, dystopian game with first person combat that resonates with the energy of what came before it. It is still currently in development, so there is no sign of a release window as of right now.

Metro Awakening VR

The virtual reality debut of the classic Metro series is coming this year. Set before the events of Metro 2033 with a new original story from the series’s author, Dmitry Glukhovsky, it follows Serdar, a doctor determined to fight his way to his wife with vital medicine. The things we do for love.

Legendary Tales VR

Urban Wolf Games is bringing their action fantasy title to PS VR2. Want to use magic spells to cast destruction, or body slam a skeleton onto a wooden table and punch its head off? Now you have the chance when Legendary Tales VR releases February 8, 2024.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

At State of Play Capcom gave us another look at Dragon’s Dogma 2, the long-desired sequel to the cult RPG hit. This action trailer shows off combat classes changing while in the middle of fighting. Dragon’s Dogma 2 releases March 22, 2024.

Rise of the Ronin

Team Ninja is back with another game that has controllers crying out in fear. We got to see Rise of the Ronin’s traversal systems, 1-on-1 combat, the various weaponry, and the world of Yokohama. As a huge fan of Ghost of Tsushima, this looks to scratch the itch that game has left in me, even if I fear what Team Ninja is capable of thanks to the Ninja Gaiden days. Rise of the Ronin releases March 22.

Until Dawn

Until Dawn is being brought to PlayStation 5 and PC, but it is not just a direct port. The game has been updated with a new third person camera, enhancing the already great graphics, and is coming to us from the hands of Ballistic Moon, a new studio with leadership coming from Supermassive Games. Until Dawn releases later in 2024.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

Here we have Kojima doing what Kojima does best, make a nine minute trailer feel like five. There are references galore, and honestly the less you know the better. I implore you to just go check out this absolutely bonkers trailer for a videogame. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach does not have a release window as of right now.

There was also the announcement that Kojima will be working on a brand new IP for PlayStation. All that’s known is that this is an action espionage game named Physint, but finer details are yet to be seen.
