Maxi Revealed in New Trailer for Soulcalibur VI

With every new Soulcalibur VI trailer, a new character is revealed, and today’s trailer showcases the fan-favorite character Maxi. He seems to be as formidable as ever with his fighting style, Shissen Karihadi, being both quick and dangerous when facing off against his opponent in an up-close melee. With his trusty nunchaku in hand, Maxi makes for a formidable fighter.

In the trailer, his grappling abilities are played up alongside his Weapons Arts and Critical Edges/Finishes, which look to be as powerful as they are flamboyant. Soulcalibur VI is shaping up to be a genuinely gorgeous game and Maxi’s trailer really shows off how great the game’s animation and lighting effects look—colors pop, and characters move with a more natural flow and grace that has yet to be seen in the long-running series. Maxi faces off against both Mitsurugi and Nightmare in the trailer, and his ability for a quick flurry of up-close attacks and strong kicks that have a knockdown chance pair well, tactically speaking, with the heavier ranged nature of those characters’ play and fighting styles.

Maxi has been a series staple since the first Soulcalibur was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 1999, and his inclusion in this new entry is not surprising, as he has been featured in every Soulcalibur game. Maxi grew up the son of a traveling merchant, spending his youth on-ship as they traveled from harbor to harbor. During one of those such travels, Maxi met a man named Zhang Wu who, after beating Maxi in a duel, became his master in the ways of the nunchaku. Once Maxi’s father died, he became a roaming pirate and mercenary, traveling from place to place in search of the next great (and profitable) fight. Over time, he found his arch-nemesis in the monstrous Astaroth. From that point on, Maxi’s lore is both needlessly confusing and uninteresting.

Soulcalibur VI is slated to release sometime later this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. It is available for preorder now. Soulcalibur VI will most likely have a prominent showing at E3, as fans are rabid to know more about the game—mainly its release date.

Check out the new trailer below and let the glory of Maxi’s pompadour wash over you.
