Nintendo Announces Sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Shares First Trailer

In a surprise move, Nintendo announced a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild during their E3 press conference Tuesday. This came after Nintendo showed off gameplay from their forthcoming The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake.

The short trailer for the sequel shows our intrepid heroes, Link and Zelda, delving into the depths of a dungeon, drawn to a mysterious presence. With shadows emerging from a corpse, eerily inverted vocal samples and ascending keys, the sequel looks to strike a darker tone than Breath of the Wild’s otherwise light palette.

The trailer ends with a wide shot of Breath of the Wild’s world, with Hyrule Castle slightly ascending into the sky. Little else is known about the sequel, though the wide shot suggests the game might have a similar open-air gameplay style as the original.

In other Zelda news, the remake for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening got a new trailer and release date Tuesday, as well. The footage showed off more of the game’s isometric camera angle, charming art design and new dungeon creation system.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening will be released on Sept. 20 on the Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for more details on the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which we ranked as our favorite Zelda game, and catch both trailers below.
