Trailer for Compulsion’s We Happy Few Wants You to Smile, Or Else

After an eerily strange tease last month, Compulsion Games, the developer behind the puzzle platformer Contrast, has released the trailer for their new game We Happy Few. We first heard word of the game earlier this month and since then our curiosity has been building. The guys behind the project have described it as “something new and exciting” involving “masks, drugs and memory loss.” They later went on to swear that the game would not be a swinger’s party.

Now with the trailer launched, we are excited to report that we are happy with the results. At least, we think we are. We may just be afraid of the consequences if we were to say otherwise. This video really has us feeling uncomfortable in every possible way, but we really don’t want to anger the creative minds at Compulsion.

The story of We Happy Few is being described as “a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial.” The game is set in what is being called a “drug-fueled, retrofuturistic” city in an alternate version of 1960s England. You must blend in to a society of do-gooders and hat-tippers. But beware, one suspicious look or wag of the finger will have you running for your life.

The trailer is really giving off a Stepford Wives meets John Carpenter’s They Live vibe. We can really imagine the good people of We Happy Few chanting “Gooble, gobble, we will make you one of us” while chasing you with sharp, pointed objects.

We Happy Few will make its debut at PAX East next week in Boston. Announcements on the project and how fans can get involved with the game are expected at the event. Until then, you can get your jollies by watching the trailer above.
