Watch the Sun-Dappled Trailer for Netflix’s New Teen Romance All the Bright Places

The most enduring genre from the early 2010s, the teen romance a la John Green, is still alive and thriving. Thursday, Netflix shared the trailer for their forthcoming film All the Bright Places starring Elle Fanning (Maleficent, 20th Century Women) and Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu). The film is based on a 2015 young adult novel of the same name by Jennifer Niven.

After Violet Markey (Fanning) loses her sister, she withdraws into herself. Theodore Finch (Smith) notices this and decides to pursue Violet to help her come out of her shell. The thing is, he has his own baggage, too.

The trailer checks all the boxes for any good teen romance—triumphant, drum-heavy indie music, a serious discussion at a cliffside lake, a bunch of sticky-notes on one of the protagonist’s walls (he lives in the roof, of course), and a lot of youthful tears. Is anyone else a little refreshed that teens still have movies like this? From To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before to Love, Simon, there’s really a teen movie for everyone, and something about that just feels right. Just a brief perusal of the trailer’s YouTube comments show many sentimental comments, citing the movie as a “dream come true” and describing, in detail, just how much the book made them cry. The director, Brett Haley, previously directed an episode for Hulu’s adaptation of John Green’s Looking For Alaska. In other words, he’s pretty perfect to head a movie like this.

The movie will also feature Alexandra Shipp, Keegan-Michael Key and Luke Wilson. All the Bright Places is set to hit Netflix on Feb. 28.
