Anna and the Apocalypse Is the Christmas Zombie Musical You’ve Been Waiting For

There are certain phrases that are just dreamt up to generate a good headline, and we must begrudgingly admit that “Christmas zombie musical” is certainly one of them. How were we supposed to resist that, after watching the newly released trailer for Anna and the Apocalypse? I mean really, can you blame us?

The British horror comedy from director John McPhail premiered at last year’s Fantastic Fest and garnered surprisingly strong reviews, currently standing at 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. In spirit, it looks like the fusion of Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland with the likes of La La Land and Krampus—not a description we expected to write at the beginning of the day, but here we are. The official synopsis is as follows:

A zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven – at Christmas – forcing Anna and her friends to fight, slash and sing their way to survival, facing the undead in a desperate race to reach their loved ones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and with civilization falling apart around them, the only people they can truly rely on are each other.

As for the trailer itself, it seems to focus primarily on establishing the visual and musical tone of the film without really telling us much about the titular character—or even showing off her singing voice, which is a bit odd for a musical. Still, there’s plenty of slapstick zombie humor, which seems to be handled pretty ably. One might argue that it’s trying a little bit too hard to provoke “OMG, so crazy!” reactions, but hey, the dancing looks fun, right?

We’ll see for ourselves this winter when Anna and the Apocalypse hits U.S. theaters, first in limited distribution on Nov. 30, 2018 and then wider on Dec. 7. Check out the trailer below.
