James Cameron Congratulates Avengers: Endgame for Toppling Avatar off Box Office Throne

It has finally happened, people. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame dethroned James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest-grossing film of all time over the weekend, and now Endgame’s makers have received some words of congratulations from Cameron.

Dubbing Endgame the new “box-office king,” Cameron took to Avatar’s Twitter to say congratulations.

Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo took to Twitter, as well, to reciprocate Cameron’s well-wishes:

It took nine years for any film to dethrone the blue, alien creatures of Avatar, and Marvel even re-released Endgame with extra footage to attract people back to the theater to see the film again. Currently, Endgame is sitting at a hefty $2.79 billion and Avatar is just barely below that with $2.78 billion. We named Marvel’s crowning achievement one of 2019’s best films so far back in June.

At San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Marvel’s Kevin Feige thanked the audience when it was projected that Endgame would finally surpass Cameron’s 2009 film on Sunday.

“Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all-time,” Feige said to the audience at Comic-Con’s Hall H, per Deadline.

At Comic-Con, Marvel announced a slew of new projects, both theatrical and for their forthcoming Disney+, as well as the title and cast additions for Thor 4, which has been aptly named Thor: Love and Thunder. Marvel also announced Mahershala Ali’s addition to the MCU as the titular character in Blade.

With many sequels for Avatar in the works, Cameron has slated the long-awaited return to Pandora, Avatar 2, for a 2021 release, so perhaps Cameron can once again reach the top of the box office and dethrone Endgame in the future.
