The Back to the Future Hoverboards Are Up For Auction
Image via Universal PicturesDiehard fans of Back to the Future will be happy to learn that Marty McFly’s pink Mattel hoverboard and Griff Tannen’s red and black Pitt Bull hoverboard are going up for auction on California’s Premiere Props site. Of course, they won’t actually fly, but they will look cool as hell above your mantel.
We’re still pretty far off from the prospect of actual floating hoverboards, like the ones we see in Back to the Future. So far, we’ve only seen “hoverboards” that are actually just Segways without the handle. Not very cool, and plus they apparently are prone to catching spontaneously on fire. If you have $10,000 laying around and a floor made completely out of copper or aluminum, you might consider the Hendo hoverboard. Unfortunately, it’s still a few years (or, realistically, a few decades) away from becoming a functioning reality.
Marty McFly’s pink hoverboard might actually be a little more affordable than the Hendo, with bidding starting at $3,000. Griff Tannen’s hoverboard, somewhat less desirable than McFly’s iconic board, starts the bidding at about half that price. The auction starts on March 25 at 2 p.m. EST. Premiere Props is also auctioning off Doc Brown’s Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor, as well as a bunch of other sci-fi swag from Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica. You can check out their catalogue “here: to view the full list. Our personal favorite, aside from Marty’s sweet board? Probably a tie between Han Solo frozen in carbonite and the completely random Bozo the Clown costume.
