New Black Widow Trailer Offers a Glimpse of the Movie’s Villain

Scarlett Johansson’s week is off to a busy start. After receiving two Oscar nominations on Monday, the trailer for the Johansson-starring Marvel movie Black Widow dropped later that night. The trailer also features Florence Pugh, David Harbor and Rachel Weisz as Black Widow’s estranged family, with somewhat-convincing Russian accents.

The film takes place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Specifically, Black Widow is supposed to examine the superheroine’s origins, including her somewhat dysfunctional relationship with her family and the program that trained her in combat.

Also introduced is the main villain of the film, known as The Taskmaster. He seamlessly mirrors Black Widow’s movements, making him a particularly tricky nemesis to get ahead of.

Black Widow is directed by Cate Shortland, marking it the second Marvel movie ever directed by a woman after last year’s Captain Marvel.

But superhero movies directed by women have a promising slate this year: the DC universe will gain Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan, as well as a second Wonder Woman installment by Patty Jenkins, while Marvel will see Chloe Zhao direct The Eternals. Netflix will also have a superhero movie directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood starring Charlize Theron, The Old Guard.

Black Widow will hit theaters May 1.
