Brie Larson Raises a Son in Captivity in Room Trailer

It seems that Brie Larson has been an “up-and-coming actress” for years now, and her dramatic performance as Joy in Lenny Abrahamson’s Room might finally be her breakout role. The official trailer for Room, based on a novel by Emma Donoghue, shows a kidnapped Larson as a young mother raising her son, Jack (Jacob Tremblay), within the confines of a small room. In order to create an illusion of any sort of normalcy, Larson lets Jack believe that “room” is the entire world.

“Truck, wiggle out, jump, run, somebody,” Larson coaches Jack to hide in a rug, escape and rescue them from their prison. After a heartbreaking reunion, the audience watches Joy and Jack adjust to the real world—a world Jack didn’t even know existed.

The film recently premiered at this year’s Telluride Film Festival to rave reviews, particularly of Larson and Tremblay’s performances. William H. Macy and Joan Allen join the cast as Larson’s parents. Room opens Oct. 16.
