David O. Russell’s New Movie Adds Michael B. Jordan, Margot Robbie to Star Alongside Christian Bale

In an apparent bid to assemble the most attractive cast in film history, David O. Russell has added fellow middle initial user Michael B. Jordan and 2020 Oscar nominee Margot Robbie to his new project, which already stars undercover cockney Christian Bale. Russell (no relation) will direct the New Regency film from his own script, his first feature directorial effort since 2015’s Jennifer Lawrence-starring Joy, and will also produce alongside Matthew Budman (Detroit, Joy), with an April production start date planned, per THR. IMDb lists the film’s working title as Amsterdam, for whatever that’s worth.

Jordan is coming off Destin Daniel Cretton’s Just Mercy, which he starred in and produced. His forthcoming projects in the offing include Marvel’s What If?, in which he’ll reprise his should’ve-been-Oscar-nominated Black Panther role by voicing Erik Killmonger, as well as Paramount’s Tom Clancy adaptation Without Remorse, Rocky offshoot sequel Creed III (which he’s expressed an interest in directing) and Ryan Coogler’s true story-inspired academic drama Wrong Answer. Next up for Jordan, though, after Russell’s latest is Sony’s A Journal for Jordan, directed by none other than Denzel Washington, which Jordan will also produce via his Outlier Society shingle.

Robbie can currently be seen starring in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, and was up for an Oscar just last weekend on the strength of her supporting performance in Jay Roach’s Fox News drama Bombshell. She also memorably depicted Sharon Tate in Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Frequent Russell collaborator Bale is coming off some Oscar excitement of his own—though he was snubbed for his stellar turn in James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari, the film itself was nominated for four Oscars, taking home two of them—and he will also appear in Taika Waititi’s forthcoming Marvel sequel Thor: Love and Thunder.
