Green Lantern Corps Finds Writers, Confirms Key Characters

Warner Bros. just landed a couple of writers for Green Lantern Corps, the forthcoming film focused on a beloved character who also happens to be one of the biggest omissions in the forthcoming Justice League lineup. News on this one has been slow-going for a while now, but the DC Extended Universe has jumped ahead quite a bit with these updates. Per Deadline, the new film is described as “Lethal Weapon in space.”

It should come as no surprise that one of the film’s writers is DCEU stalwart David S. Goyer, the man who has had his hands in the previous two DC films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So that we means we can expect a lot of grit, anger and even some sadness. Justin Rhodes will also be joining Goyer in writing the film.

The most notable Green Lantern Corps news is the confirmation of the two main characters, both of whom are Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Hal Jordan is the Lantern from the critically condemned 2011 Ryan Reynolds film Green Lantern. It’s probably safe to assume that someone else will be cast as Hal, since Reynolds has been pretty busy with Deadpool these days.

But John Stewart is an exciting confirmation, as many fans have been vying for this character to be brought to life on the big screen. As one of the more notable African-American heroes in DC Comics, he was popularized on the Justice League cartoon from the early 2000’s on Cartoon Network. In fact, many have been calling on Idris Elba to be cast as Stewart, which might be too perfect. Elba is currently at Marvel playing Heimdall in the Thor films, but Green Lantern Corps isn’t going to be out for a while, so maybe a deal can be struck between now and then. But this is all speculation, so for any hard news, keep on the lookout from Warner Bros. to update everyone.

Green Lantern Corps is due out in theaters in 2020.
