Field of Vision Launches New Season of Documentaries with Yung Chang’s Gatekeeper

Movies News Field of Vision

Field of Vision is a journalism film unit that produces short documentaries on breaking stories from around the world. It was started by three filmmakers and journalists, AJ Schnack, Charlotte Cook and Laura Poitras, who is most well-known for her role in Edward Snowden’s NSA data leak and her Oscar-winning documentary on the subject, Citizenfour. The unit has just kicked off its second season of documentaries with Gatekeeper from director Yung Chang.

Gatekeeper follows Yukio Shige, a retired cop who now spends his days patrolling the Tojinbo Cliffs, a tourist destination and popular spot for suicide jumpers, a problem that’s plagued Japan for years. The film follows Shige as he copes with the memory of an elderly couple he failed to save as a new group of sightseers arrives at the cliffs. The movie won Best Short Documentary at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

Field of Vision also produced The Vote, from Mila Aung-Thwin and Van Royko, which will be making its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 3. The movie is a look at Myanmar’s first election after 50 years of military rule.
