A Cosmic Adventure Awaits in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer

Nintendo dropped the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct, revealing that the sequel to 2023’s billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. Movie will take the plumber brothers beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into the cosmos.

Returning directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic once again team up with Illumination for a follow-up that adapts one of the most beloved entries in the Mario canon: 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Wii. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson all reprise their roles, joined this time by Brie Larson as the mysterious Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.

The adventure begins when the brothers, Peach, and Toad rocket into the stars, traveling across kaleidoscopic planets, a water world, a sandscape of inverted pyramids, and other intergalactic fever dreams. Rosalina’s defends her starry domain with a magic wand, while Bowser Jr. wields a paintbrush that doubles as a weapon.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri has described it as a story designed to “appeal to lifelong Mario fans and newcomers alike,” with the kind of visual spectacle that puts nostalgia into orbit. The rise of video game adaptations marks a curious cultural shift, as the genre has become a new kind of mythology. Where comic books once ruled the box office, pixel-born heroes now carry the torch, remixed, re-rendered, and repackaged for multiplexes. The success of The Last of Us, Five Nights at Freddy’s, A Minecraft Movie, and Super Mario Bros. signals nostalgia industrialized, the translation of interactivity into spectacle.

Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, this sequel is set to expand the Mario cinematic universe in every direction imaginable.
