It’s a classic “whodunnit?” and, oh, are there tons of suspects in the first trailer for Rian Johnson’s forthcoming star-studded murder-mystery film Knives Out.

“The idea was to take everything I love about a great Agatha Christie story and put it into a new original story set in modern-day America,” Johnson told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s kind of the essence of it.”

Set for release just before Thanksgiving, the new film from the Star Wars: The Last Jedi director finds a Southern detective (Daniel Craig) and two local cops (Lakeith Stanfield and Noah Segan) investigating the death of a family’s patriarch after a family gathering goes wrong.

Said patriarch, played by the legendary Christopher Plummer, is Harlan Thrombey, a mystery novel writer who mysteriously dies during a reunion with his family, which is portrayed by some big-time actors. Halloween’s Jamie Lee Curtis portrays Thrombey’s daughter Linda, The Shape of Water’s Michael Shannon stars as his son Walt and Captain America himself, Chris Evans, portrays Thrombey’s grandson Ransom. The cast is rounded out by Hereditary’s Toni Collette, Love, Simon’s Katherine Langford, Blade Runner 2049’s Ana de Armas, HBO’s Watchmen’s Don Johnson and It’s Jaeden Martell.

Taking actors who have notably done more action, thriller or horror-oriented films in the past couple years, Knives Out lets them have a bit of fun with its comedic edge.

“The truth is, everybody just clicked and had a great time and there was a real incredibly wonderful experience to shoot, especially in the group scenes when they were all together,” Johnson told EW. “They were all playing off of each other and they were all just having so much fun that it was infectious. I think it comes through. We have a couple really gangbuster scenes where the whole family gets to go at each other’s throats. It’s really something to see.”

The trailer contains the perfect amount of action mixed with the perfect amount of comedy, and with its release just a day before Thanksgiving, it seems to be a great way of rationalizing that your family isn’t as messed up as the Thrombey clan.
