La La Land has already emerged as a Best Picture favorite, and the official trailer, released today, shows us why. The musical, which follows two dreamers (Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) who fall for each other in Los Angeles, has earned high marks from critics, and is one of the most eagerly anticipated releases of the rest of the year.
In the full-length trailer for the film, titled “Dreamers,” we get our first looks at John Legend, who plays a musical acquaintance of Gosling’s Sebastian, and J.K. Simmons, who fires Sebastian from his club on Christmas. The trailer also gives us a look at some of the film’s bigger musical numbers, including a dance sequence which appears to take place on an L.A. highway.
La La Land has already scooped up several prizes on the festival circuit, including the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Writer-director Damien Chazelle, only 32, has already been to the Oscars with Whiplash, which earned J.K. Simmons a Best Supporting Actor trophy. La La Land has a limited release on Dec. 9 before going wide on Dec. 16. Until then, check out the new trailer above, and watch its previous teasers here.
