Netflix Will Be the Home of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Directorial Debut

Netflix has acquired the rights to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s directorial debut, a film adaptation of Tony-Award winning playwright Jonathan Larson’s musical Tick, Tick…Boom!, per Variety.

Written in 1990 by Larson, the brains behind the critically acclaimed musical Rent, Tick, Tick…Boom! tells the story of an aspiring musical theater composer consumed with guilt that he is nearing his 30th birthday and has yet to achieve anything of greatness. The musical is said to be an autobiographical work.

Dear Evan Hansen writer Stephen Levenson is set to adapt the script based on the original stage show, which originally ran off-Broadway in 1990 and was revamped for multiple productions after Larson’s death in 1996, while Andrew Garfield is reportedly in talks to star (did we bury the lede?), though no deal is yet in place.

Though a directorial novice, Miranda has skin in the game. The famed Broadway star helped to piece together the soundtrack for 2016’s Moana and starred alongside Emily Blunt in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns. Oh, and not to mention he’s the mastermind behind the Hamilton behemoth, and a film adaptation of his first Tony-winning musical In the Heights is currently in pre-production at Warner Bros.

He’s also an outspoken fan of Larson, so we know the script is in good hands.
